Just released a few days ago, I’ve been playing with this really cool new browser from Google, appropriately titled Chrome.
The Chrome browser is really simple to use and intuitive. Sleek lines and a very web 2.0 layout. It’s based from four different engines that include Mozilla, AppleWebKit, Chrome itself and Safari! With these four powers combined, Chrome really blows everything out of the water.
Upon installing Chrome, it automatically imported my FireFox settings and shortcuts.
While it doesn’t exactly support plugins yet, Chrome for me doesn’t really need it. As of this writing, the browser only has a 12MB memory footprint, which totally rocks. It’s not as bloated as the other browsers out there, even with it’s fast and powerful browsing capabilities.
For those security conscious or just want a non-logged browsing session (as in, little Johnny doesn’t want mommy to see what he’s been “researching” on the information super highway), Chrome also has a Incognito Option where it will actually bring up a new window and nothing at all is recorded. This is another awesome feature, which I use regularly to log in to my bank account.
Another thing about the Chrome browser is the “one box” for everything. This one box can be used to search the web (Chrome actually has the option to set your default Search Engine as something other than Google, which is a bit sacrilegious IMO) and also to plug in a standard web address. This eliminates the need to have the extra box for Google like in FireFox, making that much cleaner.
To make things even simpler, when clicking on a download link, a simple button appears at the bottom left of the screen, showing you the progress, thereby not annoying you once again with the download popup screen of FireFox or other browsers. When the download is finished, simply click once on the button and the download will open.
As of this writing, Google has not yet released a Mac version of Chrome, but if you visit http://google.com/chrome from your Apple machine, you can input your email address and Google will let you know when it will be available for download.
So to reiterate, Google Chrome is hands down cool. As an added bonus, go look for this awesome Easter Egg in Chrome: In your current or a new tab, type in “about:internets” without the quotes, and you’ll be surprised with a nifty relic of olden days.
